Light and Dark
Statement of intent
For my portfolio, I intend to create a variety of images that are based on shadows, light and dark. The reason I have chosen this theme is because it allows me to express my thoughts and ideas on how to produce creative images using shadows, light and different shades of colour. It also gives me an oppurtunity to explore different places and it expands my skills on how to enhance moods and tones in my images. My first trip for my light and dark theme is Manchester city centre, where I will be capturing shadows and different colour scales. I will also be taking shots of buildings using variations of composition rules; then I can use photoshop to create dramatic and unique edits. I have intended to mimic Alex Webb and Alex Bednij in my student choice, but I will be exploring more photographers to help enhance my work and give me more inspiration. Both photographers explore a variation of compositional rules that will aid me to produce similar photos.
Furthermore, once I have collected all my images I will connect them with photographers and their work as I would like to portray my inspirations and how I can also create professional work. I have realised that Light and Dark is a theme where I can explore other parts of photography such as colour. To develop my work even further I would like to go out take photos, which will enable me to enhance my website with strong images. I am going to experiment different camera settings in order to achieve perfect light and dark images. For example, the exposure will allow me to express a variation of highlights in my shots.
Moreover, further in my portfolio you will be able to display my development in skills and create encapsulated images, which will hopefully stand out from the rest. My exams are coming up so I will be preparing for it by taking images outside of school, which will help develop my love for photography and confidence. My goal is to practice hard edits, so I can achieve a high marks and I will be focusing on developing my writing so that it is to a high standard. I am hoping the viewers of my website will understand how creative photography can be and how it can help you understand different aspects of reality from deeper meanings behind photos.
In addition, at the end of my portfolio I will do an evaluation to sum up everything on this page
I would like my final outcome of work to display all my skills and hard work that I have developed over the photography course. I hope that my work will inspire other people by motivating and encouraging them to succeed in their own projects.

Analysis 1
Context
This portrait image was produced by Alexy Bednij. Alex Bednij was born in 1988, in Russia. He is a Russian Photographer who gives his viewers a closer look at the absence of light. Alexy uses both real objects and shadows of objects to create stunning, patterns of shapes. He works with manipulative black and white digital photography work. This photo was made in Russia. He wonders if our shadows are part of some sort of illusion or if our body is part of an unreal world. Alexy Bednij deliberately creates confusing images to grab the viewers attention and naturally makes us look twice at the photo to get a better understanding. The main element in his work is to contrast the dark and light images and all shadows.
Content
Furthermore, his work is based on capturing the shadows of subjects such as people, cats, birds and many more. The series of his shadows face one direction and he creates all kinds of intriguing, unique graphic arts. His work displays impossible realities that capture the attention of viewers. He uses two cats to create an admiring heart shape with their tails. This is a realistic picture but manipulates the shadows to create distinctive images. Light is a key component in this process because it exemplifies vivid meaning and in this case was love because of the heart shape. He displays balance in his images to make sure they share the same importance. The cat's tails are used to form a heart shape, which exemplifies the importance of love and how it impacts everyone's life. Love is an important word, as it allows us to maintain long lasting relationships with friends and families. The heart is symbolising unity, affection and love. Bednij is reminding his viewers to love each other and be affectionate towards others. In my opinion this is a unrealistic picture as it seems to be edited. The cats appeared to be mirrored to create the perfect heart shape.
Composition
In addition, the sharp contrast of the tones black and white tone along his composition as he manipulates shadows to create patterns and produces positive, negative spaces in his work, which invites the viewer. He has used a low depth of field which has created a dark image. The beauty of both tones creates impeccable images. I believe that this image was taken at a bird's eye view angle to give us an idea on how he produced such a photo. Alexy creates amazing compositions and black and white forms. The photographer uses leading lines of light in the shadow, which encapsulates the heart shape created by the two cats. It helps the viewer draw there eyes to the subject of the photo. The use of the lighting highlights a specific area in the image, which makes us pay attention to the cats. Contrasts of light and shadows displays a brighter image, while the shadow can enhance the photo, which adds a little drama to the composition. Black and white photography removes any distractions of colour and allows the viewer to focus on other aspects of the photo. He purposefully creates many mirrored affects of the cats to advocate that it shares the same importance. It also shows the manipulation of shadows of cats in order to create portraits that he views as collages. He has experimented with exposure to produce perfect dark photos. The incredible modular vision he produces is really intriguing. The photographer uses birds eye view to allow the viewer to explore the whole image rather than specific part. It also allows the viewer to feel like they have power over the subjects in the photo. The viewer will be able to create new perspectives and display how perfectly symmetrical the image is. The photographer has used birds eye view to allow the viewer to see the overall subject of the image and enable theme to have power over it. This also could be signifying that love is extremely powerful and in my opinion I believe that love enriches our lives with happiness and encourages our well being. Birds eye view allows people to have unique perspective of this photo, which enhances their thoughts and ideas. It is important to see the scale of this image, as it can affect how we perceive, analyse and interpret the overall subject of this photo.
Connection
Moreover, he keeps us questioning in order to understand the visual whirl of confusion. I like the way he has positioned the cats to create a mesmorising shape. Instead of using animals I will use people to delineate unique patterns and shapes that have a meaning. The image keeps the viewer thinking about how he displays such unique photos. Alexey takes the viewer away from reality as you would not see shadows casted in different directions in the same area. I will need to focus on my White balance and ISO to create a majority dark image. He has used a fast shutter speed to make the image less sensitive to light. I have produced similar portraits as they have the same tones. I am very fascinated by the unique styles he produces as it makes me think deeper about images. I will be experimenting with my exposure levels display similar images of Alexy Bednij. His work invites viewers to explore and understand a variation of techniques. He uses a fusion of elements, which shows how photography is a interesting subject to explore. I would like to experiment with my light and dark images by using photoshop so that I can try mimic some the effects used in this luminous image.

Alex Webb was born in San Francisco on the 5th of May 1952 and was raised in England. He became very interested in photography, whilst he was in High school. In 1972 he attended the Apeiron workshops in Millerton, New York where he met Magnum photographers and Bruce Davison. Alex Webb uses street photography to make sense of the world. Some of his amazing photographs appeared in New York’s time magazines and other publications, such as Geo magazines. He was granted New York’s foundation of arts in 1986. This photograph was called the suffering of light. He became a professional photojournalist in 1974 and produced astonishing body of images. Alex Webb chooses to make complex pictures with complicated situations, which reminds his viewers that there is a beauty, mystery and otherness in peoples home and lands. This image was produced in the 1970s, but appears to look modern as it has been edited on photoshop.
Content
Moreover, the suffering of light is the first comprehensive monograph, which gathers some of his most iconic images. Webb has consistently created photographs characterised by intense light and colour. The title of his work is called the suffering of light, which could be symbolising how hope can be eaten up by dark thoughts. His work is richly layered and complex composition. Webb contrasts cultural tensions, that conveys a sense of enigma, irony and humour. The suffering of light is a photography book published by aperture in 2011. It contains a 30 year career, featuring both key works and unpublished photographs. I believe that the dark intensity has been exaggerated to convey the intense mood. It allows you to reflect on the almost philosophical importance of colour and light. I believe that the he has photoshopped the image to emphasis the different tones in the picture. This image portrays two people in the centre communicating. Alex Webb may have deliberately done this to highlight the importance of communication. Communication helps us build relationships and allow us to share our experiences just like the two people in the centre of the image.
Composition
Furthermore, many of his images were taken from the far corners of the earth, which brings a fresh perspective. I believe that Webb has used a high depth of field, which highlights the foreground and background of the image. The low white balance portrays the image as quite dark and beaming light is the center. In my opinion, Webb has used a low ISO, as the image is less sensitive to light and creates a dim appearance. The quick shutter speed has captured the details and fine arts of the photo. The aperture lens has allowed light to pass through, creating a unique and clear photo. I will need to think about props and other ideas for my shoot to create similar pictures. The photographer uses slight colours of blue, which leads you to the main aspect of the image. lighting guides the viewers gaze to the two shadows in the central focal point of the photo. Also the shadows create patterns, which gives us that uniqueness. In my opinion, the use of the darkness surrounding the main aspect of the image makes the viewer feel that there is a heated dispute between the two people in the middle of the image. The darkness minimizes the lighting to show how the atmosphere and the mood in the photo changes. The use of the composition makes the image appear surreal and quite impossible to achieve. This image creates shadows, which creates a unique pattern and hints a distinctive perspective. The photo seems quite surreal since the colours are extremely bright, which also enhances the image. The hint of navy blue compliments the yellow lighting, which helps highlight the shadows in the image.
Connection
In addition, this image has inspired how Webb uses light and dark to create images with deeper meaning. It really draws the attention of viewers. I would like to recreate some of his photos, but using different shades of colour and also using Light, Dark. I will try to explore different angles of taking images and using different settings to see the outcomes. I will need to focus on my composition and camera setting skills to achieve high quality images. I can use some of Alex Webb's ideas to help me produce distinctive, stunning photographs. I want my photos to have hidden meanings, which will help the viewers expand on their thoughts. I find his work very intriguing as he explores different tones of light; creating a dramatic effect. I would like to experiment with my light and dark images by photoshopping objects, creating a variety of different effects. I am aiming to create complex edits, which will help boost my creativity.

Alexy Bednij created this image to intrigues and captivate the viewers of this image. This Russian artist creates shadow graphic art. In the picture everything is perfectly placed and nothing is overlapped. However he has created an illusion where each identical, pawn chess pieces reflect a different type of piece underneath. It is a surreal image, as it is in black and white and it seems like the chess piece is floating. The chess pieces have been perfectly placed in line emphasisng equality of each piece. However, the reflection displays distinct differences, as they are not equal in status; when it comes to playing chess. This also exemplifies the uniqueness of each piece. In the upper half of the image portrays 5 pawn chess pieces. the pawn chess pieces symbolise the unimportance or outright disposability. These pieces have the ability to be controlled. However, the bottom half of the image displays different chess pieces that have a higher level of status. The photographer deliberately does this to compare individual differences. Moreover, this image could be suggesting how society is ranked, for example working class, middle class and higher classes; which emphasises everyone's different status just like these chess pieces. In my opinion the image is exaggerated as the reflections in the bottom half are completely different from the top half. The top appears to be quite simple, however this may be signifying the importance of equality in a game. The bottom half appears to be more complex as it displays different chess pieces that have a different status in the game.
Composition
He creates a pulchritude image by using composition and patterns. The identical chess pieces contrast from the reflection. The reflection creates a darker tone and it seems more like an accurate sketch of different chess pieces. It creates a 3D image, which makes it the photo appear more realistic. However the reflection of the different chess pieces create impossible realities, which intrigues the viewers of the image; just like myself. The line up of the chess piece almost remind me of an army of people ready for war. The photographer purposefully creates a lighter tone in the upper half o the image and a darker tone in the bottom half of the image, to show the contrast in hierarchy in chess. I believe the photographer has used rule of thirds to make the image appear more symmetrical and neat. In my opinion I think he has used a low exposure to create the black and white effect. The background introduces leading lines to the image to help guide the viewers eyes up and down the image. The scale patterns in the background compliments the wooden chess pieces.
Connection
I would like to experiment with using positive space, so that when people view my image it seems to be inviting them in. I really like his work as it is unique and he producing interesting surreal photos that capture my attention. I will try to create similar images like this, but with one chess piece instead of multiple. I will be editing each chess piece with a chess board background to create a surreal perspective on photoshop. I will try to mimic the effects on photoshop to create a powerful image. In my images I will pick out the most powerful chess piece and edit to explore the power and emphasis its status. This piece of work grabbed my attention since I have become very intrigued about chess. Chess allows people to develop their cognitive skills, which is extremely vital in society today. The chess pieces helps improve self confidence and self worth, which is important to understand.

Plan for shoot 2 light and dark
Name:
Komal Kaur
Project Title/ shoot number:
Light and dark shoot 3
Description of aims for shoot:
I would like to capture images using glass balls, which allows you to see the world in a completely different perspective. It zooms into different buildings highlighting the different effects. Furthermore, I want to create shadows that highlights the shape of my object.
Links with Photographers
I will use different composition rules from Alex Webb and Alexy Bednij by exploring different ways of creating light and dark effects. He uses animals and objects to create unique shadows.
Location:
Props/ items needed:
Kit needed e.g. lighting, tripod, backdrop, macro lens:
Stretford high school
I would like to use different magnifying objects that create shadows and I am hoping to produce images, which will portray a different perspective of the world, by zooming in and creating inverted effects on different objects.
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop :
White Balance:
Shutter speed:
ISO:
F32
Daylight
1/1000
400
Which compositional rules will I use?
The compositional rules I will be using are rule of thirds, central focus point, worm's eye view and bird's eye view, to gain an overall view of an object. I will mainly focus on central focal point, since it demands the most attention from the viewer and to which the eye is naturally drawn. Moreover, I will try to focus on other compositional rules that will help me gain a better understanding.

ISO:
I want the focal point to be the shadows and the object being out of focus. I will experiment with different f stops to produce amazing images for my website.
I will be indoors so my white balance will be low. I am going to use different light intensities to help me create shadows .
Approximately, I will be using 1/125 a second, so that I can get an accurate photo of what I would like to achieve in this shoot. I will also be experimenting with different shutter speeds to capture the emotions created by my peer.
I will keep the ISO low as I will need it to produce shadows, using light from the kit that I will be using.
Which compositional rules will I use?
Alex Bednij experimented with a Birds Eye view angle and used different tones of black and white in order to produce shadows. I will also be experimenting with central focus points and different angles to create many different types of shadow images. It may be a struggle for me to use the rule of thirds because I will be using one object and peer at a time. But I will try my best to create these styles.

F-Stop :
White Balance:
Shutter speed:
During this process I was exploring the effects of movement, when taking a picture. I used one of my peer members to move his face up and down to capture the double exposure affect. My shutter speed was slow, which allowed me to portray the effect I wanted to achieve in my images. My images display movement of the person, to allow the viewers of my website to understand how I created these effects.
I wanted to explore what effect the lighting would have on his face when shining it in different positions. I managed to achieve some shadows thou outlined the back of his head perfectly on the orange backdrop. The use of the orange background helps enhance the the shadows created.
Plan shoot 6
Project Title/ shoot number:
Light and dark Shoot 6
Name:
Komal Kaur
Description of aims for shoot:
In this shoot I aim to focus on photographing architecture in Manchester. I would like to create patterns with shadows and highlight the light and dark features of the buildings. I want to explore the effects of how light can change the tone of a a building. Furthermore, I will try to capture shadows of trees and leaves that I can use to edit in photoshop.
Links with Photographers
I intend to mimic Ferdinando Scianna and Willy Ronis as they capture patterns and dark shadows. Their work has inspired me to go out and mimic similar styles.
Location: Manchester city center
Props/ items needed:
Capture images of buildings
Light reflector
Camera
Battery
Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop : F32
White Balance: Daylight 1/1000
ISO: 600
Which compositional rules will I use?
I will try to use a variation of compositional rules. For example, the rule of thirds and worms' eye view. It allows me to enhance my skills and display unique images. I would like to explore how light can create shadows and what effects it can have on different buildings.

BestIn my opinion this is my best image as, it is very clear and portrays the lighting I wanted to capture. I had an aperature of F11, which produced a crystal clear photo. The white balance highlights the bright light that grabs the viewers attention. My high ISO enhanced the quality of my image. The rays of natural light coming through the window intensifies the colours of the LGBTQ flag.
|
WorstIn my opinion this is my worst image because my shutter speed was very slow. My white balance was too high, which resulted in a blurred and bright photo. The camera lens was not in focus therefore contributed to the indistinctive display.

Cathedral
In these images I was experimenting with my exposure levels to create a dark and crisp image in order to achieve light and dark photo. The patterns on the windows resemble the stories of Jesus Christ. I found this very fascinating as it is my first time being in a cathedral and exploring different artefacts with symbolisms.
This image here is displaying candles lit up in a cathedral. It is really important as each of these candles symbolise the prayers of loved ones, signifying faith entering the light of god. The light conveys the reverence and desire to stay present in the prayer even when you continue with your daily lives. In Christianity being a child of light and therefore child of god. It is a sign of hope and a vital part of finding guidance, healing and connecting with souls departing from each other.
Shadows of people
More shadows
These are my best images, as they display the shadows, which capture unique patterns of framing. The camera is in focus, which creates a strong and clear image. My ISO was on 200, which was great for bright daylight. The white balance allowed me to produce a judicious and intriguing photo.
All these shadow images were inspired by Alexy Bednij, I wanted to explore the different shapes created by shadows and how the lighting impacts it.
Lights
BestIn my opinion this is my best image as, I love the the spots of light, which create vertical patterns. This photo is very unique and has a distinctive style that emphasises the capacity. The high ISO of my camera enabled me to capture natural lighting to get a better exposed image. The low white balance allowed the photo to have a better conditioned outcome.
|
WorstIn my opinion this is my worst image because my ISO is too low, creating an extremely dark photo. My low white balance contributed to the darkness of the image. The low aperature in my photo did not allow enough natural lighting in, which produced an unilluminated outcome.
|
In my opinion, these light images create a illuminous effect, which attracts and evokes positive feelings. The golden lights compliments the darkness around it and their is a result of energy rising caused by the image. Furthermore, it brings a sense of hope and beauty.
BestThis is my best image in my opinion, as I can view the whole image and the exposure of the image creates a clear photo; which intensifies the lights, contrasting from the dark background. My ISO was on auto, which allowed me to capture a unique shot.
|
WorstThis is my worst photo in my opinion because I cannot view the whole image. The angle the image was taken at did not create a good quality image. My camera was not in focus which gave it a blurred appearance.
|
Best|In my opinion this is my best image as it clearer. The white balance is perfect for the natural lighting as it shows off the actual structure of the building. The focal lens is in focus creating a high quality photo.
|
WorstThis is my worst image as the exposure was too high creating an extremely bright image. The image is unclear and my focal lens was not in focus, which resulted in a blurry outcome. The white balance was too high making the image appear white. The F stop was high which captured the movement of the camera.

Evaluation
The theme I wanted to explore was light and dark. I was very interested in light and dark, as it allowed me to display my ideas and thoughts on different aspects. I have portrayed a new perspective from my camera lenses, to allow viewers to develop emotional responses and a better understanding of the theme. I have created many different styles of edits with neon lights and double exposure. This has enhanced my photoshop skills and helped me exemplify different ideas for certain images I have taken. Furthermore, the photographers I researched were Alexy Bednij and Alex Webb, they mainly focused on shadows that created unique patterns, which had hidden meanings. This guides people to think deeper, creating multiple perspectives. I intended to produce a variety of images that were based on shadows, light and dark. The reason I have chosen this theme is because it allowed me to express my thoughts and ideas on how to produce creative images using shadows, light and different shades of colour. It also gave me an opportunity to explore different places and it expands my skills on how to enhance moods and tones in my images.
I have gained a variety of skills which have developed even further throughout the photography course. My final outcomes display the efforts I have put into this project and development of my editing skills. Light and dark has enabled me to explore different parts of photography, such as contrast in tones and colours. I have experimented with Photoshop to create emasculate edits, encouraging creative ideas and thoughts of mine. I have collected many different images that mimic the photographers I have chosen for my project. My first trip for my light and dark theme was Manchester city centre, where I captured shadows and different colour scales. I also took many shots of buildings using variations of composition rules; then I can use photoshop to create dramatic and unique edits through my project.
I am hoping my viewers will understand how, light and dark allows you to explore a variation of features that enable us to understand the importance of the meaning behind different photos. I am hoping that this project will help inspire others to express and expand their photography skills, which will encourage them to chooses this course for their GCSE
