Portrait
Statement of intent
Within this portfolio I intend to choose a variation of portrait themes, so I can highlight my aim within photography and to show what themes I want to emphasise through my work, so I can enhance my skills within GCSE photography. As I reach the end of my Portfolio I will select the most significant photo within my gallery so I can imply those skills towards my style of photography.
For my portrait themes, I will utilise the effect of Charlie Waite, which is generally focused within Greenery and nature. Furthermore, I can adapt his skills and photoshop skills. I will achieve this skill by using those settings so I can mimic his style. This significantly develops my style of photography which is focused within cultural, religious and traditional styling. I am also using the style of David Norton which contrasts with this style, since it denotes the winter season and uses contracting colours such as green, blue and white. By emphasising these colours within this style of photography I will be able to show a variation of themes throughout my coursework.
I really like the idea of portrait since it has different photographic meanings and allows me to showcase my themes within a format which is projecting nature, rather than portrait which gives more reverence towards society and individuality. Additionally, the portrait site is more alluding compared to the portrait sight since its drastic meanings. Furthermore, David Noton uses many compositional rules, which I will try to focus on in my photography. He explores many different colours in his portrait, as it helps focus your attention on the subject, which pleases the eye.
To denote progress within my work I will aim for specific photographers like David doublet which gives connotations of sea life, and this matches the style of photography of which I have done. This also highlights the central theme of landscape photography which is directed towards outwards rather than the portrait style, and this gives more focus towards inner thoughts and expressions. This will enhance my grade and understanding of photography and how I am able to adapt specific skills for improvement. This style of portrait highlights the expression of nature and the world and this can be improved by my photoshop editing skills.

This piece of work was made by Annie Lebovitz for a film. The themes of les Misérables are concerned with social issues in the 19th century Urban France. It portrayed love, courage, heartbreak, passion and resilience. It is an iconic, landscape photo of the young Cosette. In my opinion this photo is about a lonely girl, that could be representing courage, trauma, resilience and desperation as her skin looks rough and covers with dirt. I can infer that the work could be representing a young girl that has survived a lot of trauma in her life. I believe that this picture is partially realistic because I think that the photo has been edited, for example her eyes seem less realistic as they are a very deep blue colour. The ocean blue eyes draws grabs the viewers attention. Moreover, it is realistic because it is depicting a real person. Furthermore, I think that the eyes of the young girl are quite exaggerated, because the blue colour is extremely deep, which makes us draw attention to it. The theme of this picture is hope in a world full of misery because it is a young girl that seems to be trapped in poverty and a life full of darkness. I strongly believe that the message of this picture is that you must rise from the darkness, to build a better future for yourself. The dark tone creates a dull and gloomy mood. The bright shine to the face contrast from the dark backdrop creates a dark tone.
Composition
I think that this picture is using the rule of thirds, because her face is set on the right side of the picture leaving the left side full of empty space. It makes the most of empty space and it draws the viewers attention to a specific part of the Image. The sweet spot of the image is the eyes of the model, as it is extremely vivid and outstanding. Also the picture uses strong, leading lines as her hair strands are flowing in one direction. It allows the viewer to glide there eyes across the image. I think that the picture has a shallow depth of field. The picture grabs hold of your attention as the girl in the photo is glaring at you. I believe that the white balance has created a bright and clear picture. The lighting of the picture shines from the left side of the image, but gradually fades on the right side, making it look dark. The dark appearance of the image creates a gloomy, somber mood and atmosphere. The blended dark blue and black in the backdrop creates a isolated atmosphere, which makes the viewer infer many ideas about the context of the picture. The low ISO has resulted in a dim image that, which creates a dark and dull mood. I believe that the small opening of the aperture has been used, which has resulted in less light passing through the camera lens.
Connection
In my opinion I really like this picture as it has a lot of meaning and context behind it. It is a sophisticated and insightful image and it allows me to think deeper about things which develop into creative ideas. Furthermore, the use of the dim background immediately creates a dark theme but the blue colour symbolises a sign of hope and freedom. When I first saw the picture, the blue eyes of the girl instantly grabbed hold of my attention as her ocean eyes were symbolising trauma and heartbreak. The reason why I really liked this picture was because the picture of the girl shares a story that many people in the world could be facing, today and it gives a sense of hope. This photograph links to my work as most of my photos have a powerful meaning behind them. In the future I would like to imitate some of Annie Leibovitz photographs as it changes the perspective of how we see photo. The bright, blue eyes juxtaposes the dim, dark background which could be conveying that there is always a sign of hope to pull you through bad times in life.

Context
This is Fan Ho’s striking street photography of Hong Kong in the 1950s and 1960s. This picture was used for documentation. The photographer was born on the 8th of October 1931 in Shanghai, China. He was a director and actor that was known for, Ta Bei wu ai (1980), Ye ji qing (1989) and Hua jie (1982). He died on June 19, 2016 in San Jose, California, USA. His photographic career started at the young age of 14, when given his first kodak brownie by his father. Within the first year he won his first award in 1949, Shanghai. At the age of 18 he required his twin lens rolleiflex, which he captured all his famous work after he moved to Hong Kong with his parents and continued to pursue his love for photography. This photographer is best known for his stylized imagery. The portrait of Hong Kong focuses on spontaneous images closer in feel to contemporary street photography. Opening on March 22, 2019 at the Blue lotus Gallery in Hong Kong, the exhibit showcases selections from the last body of work selected by Ho himself. In 2015, Ho embarked on a project to review his extensive archives and look for work that was previously unpublished. The project was an extension of his photography philosophies as written in his 1959 book, which was called thoughts of street photography.
Content
This landscape photo is about the feel of street photography. This picture portrays everyday life in Hong Kong and displays how every contented moment we have in life is precious. The title of this picture is called ‘Young Musketeers.’ I feel like the picture is accurate with the title as the picture delineates a strong bond with friendship. Moreover this is a realistic picture because it shows us precious moments that we should hold close to our hearts. The theme of the picture has been exaggerated as there is no colour in the photo and it allows you to have another perspective of images. In my opinion the theme of this picture is happiness. The message the work communicates is that life is full of happy moments and we should cherish them. This is shown through the wide smiles of the three boys modelling in the picture. The dark background contrasts from there happy emotion on there three faces. Fan Ho uses black and white as he believes black and white offers a distance from the scene of real life. Unlike many street photographers he enjoys cropping, which makes him feel like he is making a movie and enjoying the editing process. He explored and captured everyday life, for example children's having fun. This image notary's that you can still be happy even if you are poor and do not have the best things in life. Furthermore, this also is advocating a message to the audience, conveying how happiness is important in life and not just money.
Composition
This picture uses the rule of thirds. It is a frame that places the subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two thirds more open. It divides a photo into nine equal parts, split by two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines. This helps direct the viewer’s gaze to the main focal point of the image. It makes up most of the empty space by drawing your eye to a specific part of the image, emphasised through composition. In my opinion I think that the white balance is low because the image is dark themed. I think that the photographer has used a low ISO because it is dark, which means that the image has less sensitivity to light. Furthermore, Fan Ho has used a fast shutter speed to let less light in. The photo has been cropped, which allows the viewers to focus on a specific part of the image. The photographer uses rule of three and positions the three young models in height order. This also links to the background where the stairs go up in order. The use of the small opening of the lens diaphragm, has produced a dark image which is less sensitive to light.
Connection
I like the style of Fan Ho’s striking street photography, as it is another way of expressing life in a better way. According to Fan Ho, this offers some sort of distance from reality. I also adore how his photos are a genre of records from everyday life, in public places. This image captures emotions of happiness, from kids that live in poverty and are less fortunate than us. Moreover this makes us feel that being happy is a very important and key part of our everyday lives, because it drives us to do good things. Black and white photos can convey emotions in a way simply colour images can’t, which produces unique images just like this one. It also gives the image a forgiving, sentimental look. I would like to use some of his ideas to help me create photos with unique meanings. I will need to focus on my ISO to produce a black and white image.
Analysis 3
Context
In my opinion I believe that this portrait image resembles darkness and creates an emotion of sadness and loneliness. This is a realistic picture as it portrays a man that is standing alone with a lot of empty, black space. This further delineates that he may be going through a tough time and is feeling quite melancholy and unhappy. Moreover, the picture is slightly blurred which could be symbolising that he has no one to explain his feelings to and he is in a low mood. Moreover, this photo has been exaggerated as there is a lot of darkness to help convey that this person is upset and wants the viewer to develop thoughts of loneliness, which the photographer intended to achieve. This photo communicates with the viewer through its compositional skills and its dark theme; it makes the viewer think that this person is depressed and sad, which also helps raise more awareness of people who are lonely and need some comfort and warmth to touch their hearts. A dark tone is created by the dark colours, which also creates a dull mood. The background is black because it could be resembling someone who is going through a tough time. The lighting on the left hand side of the face could just be revealing the sad expression of the model. The model has this sad expression because they are struggling with their mental health. The empty, black space on the right hand side of the image shows that the man is lost and searching for hope as he is very sorrowful. The man is directly gazing at the camera which allows us to develop inferences and deeper meanings about this photo.
Composition:
Moreover, In this image I can see that the photographer has displayed the rule of thirds and blurred his image. This helps emphasise that he is very lonely and lost, as there is a large amount of empty space on the right hand side of the picture. I believe that the photographer has purposefully done this to help guide the viewer's gaze, specifically to the left, then right of the image to allow them to gain a better understanding of the picture. Furthermore, the white balance of the image is low because the picture is dark themed. The photographer uses a low ISO, as the photo is less sensitive to the light; this helps convey that the image is dark. Moreover the photographer has used a fast shutter speed because he wanted less light in his image, so he could complete his overall look. This image achieves a unique theme and it delineates a range of different camera skills. The photographer has used a tripod to achieve the rule of thirds, which is when the subject is placed on the left or right side of an image and in this case the left. The fast shutter speed has resulted in a clear still image and the white balance must be very low as the picture is extremely dark. The effect of the composition rules the person has used has created an effective photo, which makes the viewers develop many thoughts and ideas of why the model is melancholy. I believe a microscopic lens has been used as the picture portrays the models face to be quite close up. The use of the small opening of the aperture has resulted in a dark image.
Connections/Inspiration:
Furthermore, the reason why I picked this image was because it conveys a unique meaning and allows the viewer to have a better understanding of what it is like for people who are lonely and struggling. The dark theme really, helps emphasise that this person is going through a tough time and captures a sad theme. Dark Images can simply capture dark emotions that colour images can’t and it indicates how unique this image is. I would like to capture similar images as this photographer because it allows people to have a better understanding of what it is like for people who are going through depression and loneliness. This image relates to some of the images I have produced as I have tried to convey dark moods and portray a dim atmosphere. Furthermore, it raises more awareness of people who are suffering, which will enable people to help others through tough times. I will try to achieve this image by focusing more on my camera skills such as my ISO, white balance and shutter speed. I can use this image to help inspire me to create similar images to convey more awareness of people who are lonely and struggling to survive in life. The skills I need to improve on are my composition and camera skills. This photographer's work links to mine through composition and subject matter. The empty black space leads the viewer's eyes through the dark to the face of the model.

Baseline, outdoor shoot
BestIn my opinion this is my best photo as the the cameras focal lens has been adjusted, which has resulted in a clear image. The white balance and ISO has led to a bright and natural image, which makes the model more visible. The shutter speed is fast which captures a still bold image. The right aperture captured enough light to produce a great outcome. The medium F- stop contributed to the clear photo.
|
WorstIn my opinion this is my worst photo because I did not adjust my cameras focal lens, which resulted in an unclear image of my models face. The F- stop was too low which produced a slightly unclear and blurred image.

Shoot with Victoria
Shoot with Theo and Lucas
Shoot with Mariam
In my opinion I think that none of these photos are my best photos because my white balance resulted in extremely bright photos, which does not allow you to view the models face. My camera was not in focus and my ISO was very high which also lead to a bright, white image. In one of my images the ISO was to low, which resulted in a extremely dark image. My shutter speed was very slow which made my camera lens very sensitive to light. My aperture was too open, which allowed more light to enter the lens. My high F- stop created some very bright images.
Shoot with Mariam and Victoria
In my opinion I think this this is the best image, as my camera is in focus, which has produced a clear photo. The high ISO led to a natural look and the high white balance created a vivid photo. My fast shutter speed displayed a still and dim image. I used a medium F- stop, which resulted in a great outcome.
|
In my opinion this is my worst photo as my camera was not in focus, which caused my image to look unclear and obscure. My shutter speed was too slow as it captured the movement of my model. The low F- stop resulted in a blurry image. I used ISO 400 which lead to a slightly dark photo. The low white balance contributed to the slight dark photo.

Camera settings I will use:
F-Stop : F6
White Balance:200
Shutter speed:1/250
ISO: 800
I will be using central focal point, rule of thirds and worms eye view
This was the second time I took photos on a camera, as you can see it is not the best because I was still developing my camera and composition skills In these photos. I did not have a best photo because the light intensity was extremely dark, as my ISO was too low. The face of the model is not in focus in one of the photos because I did not put my camera in focus. Furthermore the pictures are very dark which makes them less visible for the viewers. My shutter speed was too fast, which resulted in a dark image as it not enough light was able to enter the lens.

Worst |
In my opinion I think this is my best picture as my camera is well focused and it is quite intriguing, as the shadows in the background are vivid. The meaning behind this picture shows how unique Sikhs are and his turban symbolises truthfulness, maturity and fearlessness. The medium open aperture collects the correct amount of light for my image.
|
In my opinion I think this is my worst picture because my image is not in focus. The reason why it was not in focus because I did not adjust my focal camera lenses. My low F-stop resulted in a blurry image. The low ISO and white balance contributed to a blurry image.
|
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDpf6ZpDiAg&t=191s
In my opinion, I think that this is my best picture because it is well focused and the ISO has resulted in a clear and crisp image. The shutter speed has resulted in a bright photo. This emphasises that he is a Singh, who faithfully believes in one immortal being and the ten gurus in Sikhism. My high white balance created a bright and vivid image. I used a high F- stop which led to a bright image.
|
In my opinion, I think that this is my worst photo because my white balance resulted in a bright image. This did not meet my overall look. My slow shutter speed captured too much light which makes my image appear obscure and unclear. My high F-stop created a extremely bright outcome.
|
In my opinion this is my best photo because it is very intriguing and well focused. The ISO has resulted in a clear and crisp image and the white balance has resulted in contrasting colours. Also the shutter speed has resulted in a clear focal point. Furthermore, the overall image conveys, how important the turban is and that it should be treated with respect, as it symbolizes spirituality and honour.
|
On the other hand this is my worst photo, because the backdrop is revealing the background. Also your eyes are not drawn to the subject matter. This image does not meet the expectation I was going for.
|
In my opinion, this is my best photo because the ISO has resulted in a clear and crisp image. The white balance created a bright image. My camera focal lens has been adjusted to make sure my image is focused and clear. The F -stop was accurate as it produced a crisp image that I wanted to achieve.
|
In my opinion I think this is the worst photo because my white balance was low, which resulted in a dark photo. Also one of my models face was not facing the camera, so it did not complete the overall photo I set out to take.

In the images above it is displaying how women of the Indian culture dress. As you can see we wear vibrant colours, which embodies our rich culture identity. This fills us with immense pride, connecting us to our results and festivals and celebrations. The intricate patterns on the dresses resemble unmatched comfort and timeless elegance, which transcend generations.
For this photoshoot I really wanted to emphasis my culture and religion, as it will allow people to understand more about my culture and religion. This really helps give an insight to a beautiful religion and Indian culture. In the images above, it shows one of my peer members tying a turban, which is also known as dumalla or distar. This is significant because it promotes equality and brotherhood. It is also a symbol of spirituality, holiness in sikhism.
