Places and spaces Q3
Statement of intent
Within this portfolio I intend to portray images of modern buildings that resemble our modern day society. I would like to convey a variation of skills through my composition and choice of images that have unique meanings. As I reach the end of my portfolio I am hoping to create a gallery with all my edits and best photos that I have captured over the course. I want the people of Manchester to view my images and appreciate the architecture we have in our society and how long it took to build. The theme of this project is places and spaces, which explores different areas of the world that will be personal to me. The reason I chose this project was because it will allow me to display and discuss my thoughts through my photos. In addition I will be taking images in Manchester city centre, Salford Quays, libraries and my local Gurudwara. This will make my portfolio more personal to me as I was born in Manchester and I want to exemplify and encapsulate the places and spaces it offers
to the public.
In my work I will try to utilise the effects of Simon Buckley and Iwaan Baan who both capture intriguing images of the architecture in local and other countries. I want my mood boards to help explain my ideas to the viewers of this page so that they can understand my thoughts and feelings towards places and spaces. I will try to mimic the work of these 2 photographers as it will help develop my compositional skills and types of photos I take. I will be exploring historical sites in Salford and Manchester City Centre, so that we can appreciate our local communities. This is quite a personal project to me as I am exploring the city of Manchester, where I have been growing up for the past 16 years. Manchester holds many secrets and history, which has really intrigued me over my lifetime. Furthermore, I will be using photoshop to produce complex edits, which will enhance my skills. Moreover, I hope to progress in photography by improving my analysis and editing skills.
I really like the idea of architecture because it allows me to photograph a variety of images and explore the construction of buildings . I will be focusing on all my camera setting skills in order to achieve a variation of outcomes for my website. This will allow me to develop my understanding of GCSE photography. I am hoping to create complex edits to emphasis the skill I have developed from this course that I have chosen. To further develop my architecture page I need to explain my shoots and how I created the perfect images. Moreover, my exams are coming up and in preparation for this I will be going out of my way to take images of local areas. Towards the end of my project I will be writing up an evaluation explaining all the skills and ideas I had throughout the project and how it has enabled me to develop and excel in photography. My overall reflection will allow my viewers to understand my knowledge and thoughts throughout the photography course.

This image portrays a construction site; appreciating the development and hard work required to create new modern buildings in our society. In my opinion the lower part of the photo, could be exemplifying the lower class and the upper part of the image represents the higher classes, as the buildings are fully developed and are more modern. It could also be symbolising the reparation of society because there are many planks and beams that are resemble aiding the construction of this building. He has deliberately used leading lines to guide the eyes of the viewer to a specific point of the image. The planks also create a pattern almost like a maze like design. In my opinion I think he has uses the ISO 800 to create a clear and high quality image perfect for that time of day. The orange lights in the background gives of orange leading lines creating a star like shape. This grabs the viewers gaze and makes the picture more luminous and appealing. Their is a large depth of field as their is a deep foreground where the construction site is taking place and it also gives the view of the distant buildings. Furthermore, the different flashes of light immediately grabs the attention of the viewers, which also compliments the dark tones created by the night sky. The blue and orange colures clash with each other complimenting the night sky. The rule of triangles have been used purposefully to take the viewer on a journey throughout the image.

This piece of architecture was commissioned in 2008 in New York city. The tower was designed by Herzog and de Meuron, which is a renowned Swiss architecture firm. It was completed by Kapoor in January; 15 years after it was commisioned. This piece of architecture was very similar to 'the bean' in Chicago. Iwan Baan is a Dutch photographer, who was born on the 8th of February 1975 in Alkmaar, Netherlands. He uses unexpected perspectives and the precedes of people and movement of people to revive the static art of photographing structures. At the age of 12 he got his first camera and went on to study photography. Baan worked for architect, in such cities as Beijing, allowing him to focus on human focused aesthetics. Beijings booming construction industry enabled him to capture the city's liveliness of construction sites that were occupied by hundreds of thousand workers.

The sculpture reflects passerby and motorists on the streets. According to developers the sculpture is meant to be fully integrated into the iconic tower, making it a unique collaboration of sculpture and architecture. It has a ballon shape form. The mirror structure makes the public stop and be pulled in a way that disrupts time. It material reflects daily life. It is deliberately shaped like an abstract bean; squashed under the New York skyscraper to catch peoples attention and reflect the city's movement. It was inspired by liquid mercury. It is known as the Anish Kapoor sculpture. The skyscraper is known as the jingo tower as it is designed by insulated glazing stretches of slab to slab around the entire surface. It is covered in two different coatings to control glare and heat gain. It is designed inside out to exemplify identity to each apartment. It was purposefully built like a jeans tower to avoid repetition and anonymity.
Composition
In my opinion the photographer has used a high ISO as the image capture natural lighting, allowing the photo to be crisp and clear. The image has been cropped and he has use the rule of thirds to help direct the viewers gaze to the main focal point of the image, which is the Anish Kapoor sculpture. He has used the correct white balance to enhance all the colours in the photo to give it more of a realistic outcome. In addition, the smooth texture of the bead allows the viewers to explore the image more easily. In my opinion the daylight, naturally compliments the image by enhancing the glimmer of the glass building on top of the bead. The variety of shapes and sizes created by one building, takes the viewers on a journey throughout the structure, developing many thoughts and feelings. The reflective, metallic bead portrays the routines of peoples daily lives.
Connection
I really like this piece of work as it is something unique that I have never come across before. It captured my attention and immediately I became curios. Its round, bean like structure delineates a unique thoughts and ideas. The silver, reflective surface captures our everyday activities, displaying how the world works. In the future I want to focus on my depth of field and the angles I take my pictures to create similar outcomes like this one. I will try to capture unique images that deep meanings. The bean is squeezed under the tower giving it a sense of movement, which also seems like it is keeping the jenga tower held up.

The cologne based photographer took this image in Mexico-Germany Dual year exchange programme. Candida wanted to share the culture of Germany, cultural, scientific, musical and educational projects with the partner country through 2016 and 2017. In this image she is exploring architectural interior. The walls have been covered in paintings of figures, that resemble how ancient history is significant and can be used to help design modern buildings. The ancient designs on the walls allow the viewers to gain new insights and perspectives of architecture. It highlights the importance of history and how it can enrich our lives in todays society. Furthermore, the dome shape in the upper part of the image is very common in architecture normally used in government and religious buildings. The positive space created in the image creates a sense of peacefulness and a serene environment to be in. This is a realistic picture since it does not use any filters and in my opinion is natural. The work communicates large interior spaces and a range of colours.
Composition
The image has a variation of different colours that enhance the image by complementing the dull tiles. This has also been used to evoke emotions of the viewer and to give a narrative to the photo. The curves created by the walls, guide the viewers eyes across the whole image. Candida has done this to advocate the tonal and colour values. In the central focal point of the image their is leading lines, produced by the red poles. The top half of the image has dark and dull colours, which contrast from the bottom half where their is bright colours that immediately grab the viewers attention. The curves create a smooth effect, which allows the viewer to glide their eyes across the overall photo; gaining a better understanding. Moreover, the Image displace a vast amount of space, which makes it easier for people to explore the photo in greater detail. Candida captured the light rays coming through the window, which enhances the different paintings in the interior of the building. Moreover, the image is symmetrical as the structure is repeated on both sides. The photographer has deliberately used this to produce a sense of harmony and visual cohesion.
Connection
I would like to create similar images by taking pictures of central library and the Trafford Centre. The Trafford Centre is a modern building but is full of ancient architecture, such as old statues and paintings. Links with Photographers
I intend to mimic Sebastian Weiss by photographing buildings that focus on structure and pattern, this will enable my viewers to develop an emotional and personal response to the architecture. These images also link to Simon Buckley's work as he took photos in Manchester to convey city life. I hope to create lots of photos during this shoot that will display the beauty of the architecture we have in today's society.
Location:
Props/ items needed:
Salford Quays
bags and coats
Camera, SD cards, tripod, macro lens and battery.
Camera settings I will use:
My F stop will be F8
I will be outdoors so I will be using direct sunlight.. I will also be using a setting shade to produce some dark and dim photos.
I will be using a quick shutter speed to create clear actions.
I will be using an ISO 200/400 to create some dull and dim images.
Which compositional rules will I use?
I will be using the rule of thirds so that we can convey the curves of the images and create different perspectives. Furthermore, I will also be using a central focal point to emphasise the patterns of the architecture in Salford. To create in depth photos I will be taking photos of many different people to display different styles in society. Moreover, I will be focusing on worms eye view to give the perspective
Buildings
Imperial war museum
Modern buildings
In my opinion these are some of my best images because the camera setting were on point, which allowed me to capture clear photos of the building. My high white balance lead to a bright image which enhances the peak of the building. The sharp edges are defined in my image as I used central focal point, which helps outline the building better. My high ISO allowed enough light into the camera lens, which captured the perfect photo. Furthermore, the vertical lines on the building emphasises the beauty and enables the viewers of my website to explore the image smoothly.
Tanks
Edges and curves of buildings
BestThis is my best image as my camera is in focus and it is a clear and crisp image. I experimented with the exposure to create images, which would portray the uniqueness of the architecture. I wanted to capture the curve, as it allows my viewers to observe the whole image. My white balance is perfect for the lighting and the shutter speed captured some natural lighting to compliment the image. This image portrays the contrast of of the sky and the dark shadow created in the left corner.
|
WorstThis is my worst image as my exposure was to low, resulting in a dark image. My white balance was low and my shutter speed was too slow which did not allow any natural light into the image. It does not allow my viewers to explore the curves of the building. Moreover, the image does not allow the viewers of my website to explore what it is about because the low ISO has resulted in an extremely dark photo that has no value.

Poppies
These images are some of my favourite because the poppies are symbolic of remembrance over 100 years of those who died at war and hope for a peaceful future. It is a common symbol for consolation, remembrance and death. The poppies are contained in the IWM North air shard. The poppies are a form of collection in the air shard and allows people to reflect on the way war shapes our lives.
BBC
The BBC is the world leading public service broadcaster, it creates many exclusive world class programmes and content, which have educated and entertained many people across the world. The BBC is something that is always on my TV in my home, it has created so many intriguing shows that have not only entertained me but opened my mind up to the realities of life. The BBC produce creative shows that many of us appreciate and enjoy watching. I wanted to advertise these images on my website as the BBC plays a major role in my daily life, such as watching the news and reality TV shows.
Coronation street
ITV is a large commercial broadcaster and streamer in the UK, it connects with millions of people around the world, which helps shape cultures and brand with creative content. ITV has encouraged many people to take action and take care of our mental and physical well being, it is a show for everyone no matter what background you are from. The variety of programs and shows produced have entertained many young people like me throughout my life.
IWM North building
This is an aluminium clad building with distinctive angles, which is an iconic part of Manchester skyline built in 2002. This building is so important as it was built on a bomb site site, it stands on where the Hovis Grain Silos once stood before they were bombed. When the foundations were dug for the museum shrapnel and anti - aircraft cartridge shell were found. IWM North builds provokes a sensation of many emotions on people, emphasising the importance of this site.
River Irwell
This river flows through Manchester, which has attracted a large scale of investment in Salford allowing it to become more of a highly developed and wealthy place. Furthermore, it forms a political boundary between Manchester, Salford and Trafford, where waters powered the earliest industrial development of the cities; focusing on life and growth.
These are some of my best images, as they are very clear. My white balance and ISO was very accurate, which produced such neat and crisp image. The worms eye view of the photo allows the viewer to explore the curves and and cylinder shape of the building. This also is quite an abstract piece of architecture in our society, as there are not many buildings around like this. When I first saw this building, it immediately grasped my attention due to it's uniquness
Salford Quays plays a major role in the UK as it is a place if development and has created many world class business in residential areas. It withholds high quality residential buildings, which have attracted so many people. Its vibrant economy will continue to expand and play a major role in our society. This was such a fascinating place to explore as it holds so much history and fascinating buildings that have complimented Manchester.

Bridges
Modern buildings
These images are one of my best image as I love the worms eye view, which explores the patterns on the building. My camera setting were perfect as it is a clear and crisp image that has a great effect.
In my opinion these are some of my best images as it explores the uniqueness of modern architecture in Manchester. My white balance was high, which complimented the natural lighting resulting in a clear image. My shutter speed was fast, which enabled my camera to capture the right amount of light intensity. These glass buildings stand out very well bringing beauty into our city.
Cathedral
Manchester cathedral was one of my favourite places to explore, as it was a peaceful and serene place to be in. Inside was lit with candles and beautiful, coloured, mosaic patterns on the windows, which built a sense of holiness throughout the cathedral. The parish church was constructed in 1215 and provides fascinating visits amongst Manchesters busy streets. It contains an intriguing medieval past that can educate and inspire the people of Manchester.
Clock towers
Glass buildings
Trafford centre
These are some of my best images as it links back to one of the photographers I researched. Candida Hofer explored the interiors of public spaces, such as libraries. These images have similar shaped interior spaces as the library, as they have huge domes, which grabs the attention of many people just like me. In addition it resembles the beauty of space for visitors to come and explore

Shoot 3 in Manchester Gurudwara
These images are very personal to me as the Gurudwara is a personal space for me to find peace and relief from any stresses from the outside world. This is a place for me to pray and to allow my mind to be free from sadness. It is the main place for the Sikh community to get together and where the wider community can learn about the faith. Moreover, the gurudwara has given me many opportunities to become closer to god and has always been a place for any type of reassurance. This is not just a place for Sikhs, it is a place for anyone to come and pray and eat. In these images I explored the interior of the Gurudwara, which emphasises the beauty and serene place to be in.
Experimenting before exam
The architecture photographer I chose was Andrew Prokos. Andrew Prokos was born in 1971 in America, he is a New York City based architectural photographer. Andrew captures high resolution images of New York City buildings and patterns that draws a viewers attention. He is a master of long exposure photography techniques and captures exquisite photos, which detaches from the world as we see it. Moreover, his photography has been widely published and was awarded at the prix de la photography Paris. Andrew's new pieces of photography have been inverted, which allows the viewer to convey a bold, new vision. Furthermore, the reason why I chose this photographer was because the unique patterns of the building immediately grabbed my attention, as it allows you to appreciate all the different patterns that makes architecture distinctive from other buildings. It will help me develop my understanding of architecture, hopefully this give me a better insight and understanding of different architectures. In addition, this will also help me convey an and develop my compositional skills.

Evaluation
I explored the theme of places and spaces in Manchester, where I took pictures of architectures and personal places such as my local Gurudwara. My initial thoughts on this project was that I wanted to convey personal areas that have important meanings to me. The reason, why I chose to explore Manchester was because it enables viewers to appreciate what we have in society. I have been living in Manchester for my whole life and I have discovered places, which have now become important to me. The photographer I researched for this project was Sebastian Weiss and Candid Hofer. Sebastian Weiss focuses on architecture of a building and Candida Hofer focused on the interiors of buildings. Moreover, these photographers have influenced me by exploring the beauty of the interior of places like the Library and my local Gurudwara. I also explored 2 other photographers that focused on the beauty of architecture as it plays a vital role in society. I looked at the photographers, Simon Buckley and Iwan Baan.
This project has allowed me to develop my Ideas of images I want to take of buildings. I researched Simon Buckley as he from Manchester just like me and I love the pictures he takes in Manchester because it provokes new perspectives. In addition, I have been able to advocate my religion and home city through this project, which has been a great and exciting experience for me in photography. The final outcome of my project was the overlays of my favourite architectural buildings. I was experimenting with different hues and saturations to give my image à unique style. In each session of my exam I developed my edits creating many different effects and I used multiple images of the Same edit to produce a 3D effect, which will immediately grab the attention of my viewers. Furthermore, this project has allowed me to create some of my best work.
I was able to explore the different buildings that we have in Manchester, which I would encourage people to appreciate by portraying them on my website.
